Tauranga Intermediate’s boys’ sevens rugby team is locked in and ready to defend their winning title at the 2026 AIMS Games.
With a target firmly on their backs, the defending champions are embracing the challenge as they face off against top-tier competition from across the country in Tauranga Moana.
For team captain Manaia Reardon, the goal for the tournament is clear.
“For myself, for the team it’s to win, take the comp out and show all the teams why we’re still top of the table,”
Manaia adds that he relishes the opportunity to test himself against bigger players and skilled opponents from around New Zealand.
Coach Blair Tristram acknowledges the pressure of having a target on the team’s back, but embraces the challenge. He highlights the unique value of the tournament in bringing together diverse schools.
“It’s awesome for the children to be able to experience, you know for smaller schools to be able to get to Tauranga and for us to play them is massive,”
He also notes the privilege of playing at home in Tauranga Moana, allowing the team to connect with other schools and Kura Māori through sport.
For first-year player Ezekiel Webster-Falekaono of Ngāi Te Rangi, the fast-paced nature of the sevens game has fueled a newfound love for the sport. When asked Asked his ultimate aspirations, Ezekiel shares a bold ambition for the future:
“To be in the NRL.”
As the tournament unfolds, the Tauranga Intermediate squad continues to demonstrate consistency and passion on the field, chasing their athletic dreams while representing their kura on home soil.
