The Right Honourable Adrian Paki Rurawhe, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and long-serving Member of Parliament, has passed away following a recent illness.
A respected leader within Te Hāhi Rātana, Ngāti Apa, and Whanganui, Rurawhe dedicated more than a decade to public service, representing the Te Tai Hauāuru electorate from 2014 until January 2026. He served as the 31st Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives, guiding Parliament with fairness, dignity, and a strong commitment to tikanga.
Rurawhe’s lineage was steeped in political and spiritual leadership. He was the son of the late Wereta and Mihi Rurawhe, and the mokopuna of former MPs Matiu TW Rātana and Iriaka Rātana, as well as the late Paki and Meipara Rurawhe.
Speaking on behalf of the family, spokesperson Piri Rurawhe reflected on the deep void left by his passing.
“Adrian carried the legacy of his tūpuna with total humility and unwavering dedication,” Piri Rurawhe said. “Whether he was standing on the marae, serving in the Rātana Church, or presiding over Parliament, his focus was always on uplifting our people and ensuring our voices were heard with dignity.”
The whānau extended their gratitude to the public for the overwhelming outpouring of aroha and support during this difficult time.
“While our whānau is navigating immense grief, we take comfort in knowing how widely loved and respected Adrian was. He touched many lives across Māoridom and the political spectrum, and we are grateful for the kindness shared with us as we prepare to lay him to rest.”
Adrian Rurawhe will lie in state at Whangaehu Marae before his final burial at Ngā Puketurua, Rātana Pā. Further details regarding pōwhiri and nehu times are expected to be announced by the whānau shortly.
